First snow in Fairbanks, October 1st Introduction The following post probably won’t be of much interest to people outside of the fantasy baseball community, and maybe not even then, but I play in a 10 team fantasy baseball league composed of players scattered around the United States that are friends with Ned Rozell, aka Chicken Stanley. I used to play as the Swingley Athletics, but when John Fisher moved the team out of Oakland I was disgusted enough to become the Phanatics in support of my wife’s Phillies. I’ve long wondered how important the draft is to success or failure in the league and made the bold claim to Ned that I thought the top five picks would either make or sink your season. It turns out it is nowhere near that simple (of course). The following analysis looks at how the draft and all the decisions we made throughout the year contributed to our success or failure. Method Data. Everything comes from the Yahoo Fantasy API. I pulled every team’s roster for every day of the season, with each player’s lineup slot, and each active player’s daily stats (AB, H, BB, HBP, SF, TB, R, HR, RBI, SB for hitters; outs, H, BB, ER, K, TB allowed, SV+H for pitchers). From those components I built all 12 categories used in our league this year. I only counted production when the player was in an active lineup, and each player-day was labelled with where the player came from: Source Meaning Own picks, rounds 1–5 Drafted by this team in the first five rounds Own picks, rounds 6–10 Drafted by this team in rounds 6–10 Own picks, rounds 11–23 Drafted by this team in rounds 11–23 Another team’s picks Drafted by someone else; acquired by trade or waiver Undrafted pickups Never drafted; picked up during the season Next, we get the stats for the average undrafted replacement player and what they produced in real lineups in our season, keeping batters, starting pitchers and relief pitchers separate. Results Player source categories Here’s a chart showing the wins each team got from each category. Figure 1: Category wins above replacement by roster source, regular season. Teams are in order of regular-season finish. My take is that the top five picks are probably more important than any other category, but a bad draft doesn’t mean you can’t have a good season. Chicken won the regular season with a top five draft barely above replacement level. I think this also shows that you have to keep your eye on the ball throughout the draft. After the tenth round the Phanatics started picking up sentimental picks more than the best available in each round and you can see how much worse those picks wound up being. Taken individually, we can look at how each player source category (draft 1-5, draft 6-10, etc.) contributed to the winning percentage of their team. For example, if we plot the wins above replacement for the top five picks against win percentage we get the somewhat linear relationship show below, with Chicken and Cashout as outliers. More formally, each row in the following table is a separate Bayesian linear regression of a team’s regular-season category wins on that source’s category wins above replacement, fitted with rstanarm’s default weakly informative priors. The slope is the posterior median: a slope above zero indicates there is a positive relationship between wins above replacement and season standings. A team’s first five picks were worth about 5.4 category wins over the season on average, compared with filling those roster spots from the waiver wire. The range was -4.0 to +16.0. For scale, first and last place were 47 category wins apart. Top-5 value tracked the standings, loosely. In a Bayesian regression across the ten teams, each top-five category win above replacement went with about 1.5 more category wins in the standings (95% interval -0.1 to 3.1). The probability that the slope is positive is 0.97, and top-five value accounts for about 33% of the variation in the standings. No other roster source (later picks, trades, pickups) is as clear. A bad first five picks was costly. The only two teams whose top five came in below replacement finished ninth and tenth. But it wasn’t necessary. Chicken and Cashout finished first and second without much help from their top five. The three teams that got the most from theirs finished third, fourth and sixth. Round 1 was the most important. First-round picks averaged 3.5 category wins each, second-rounders 1.6, and rounds 3–5 about 1 or less. Players taken after round 5 averaged roughly zero despite the large outliers in those rounds.
