Hello everyone !No new work or process post for now, as what I have been working on this summer is under nda (thought I hope to share soonish with you some news about stone witches !). So in the mean time, lets dive behind the scene, for a short tour in the practise room. Some 2 minutes gesture drawing from last weekend For those who don't know gesture drawings, that's a type of drawing exercises where you try to draw poses in a very limited time (15s to 5 min for those I will show here) to practices flow, dynamic, proportion and quick understanding of the human body in action strange shapes. That's not something I practised often throughout the years, but it looks like I finally built a good practice routine !It started as a challenge with my friend Kris Void, to try to do gesture every day for a week. First day sound hard but in the process of the week we started to find fun in it, and decided to do a second week of the challenge. 1 minutes gesture from day one - wasn't a charm 2 and 5 minutes gestures two weeks in These two weeks of challenge were pretty fun but not really a sustainable rythm on long term. Thought it allowed me to identify a time each day I could dedicate to practice. But instead of committing to practice every day, I choose to alternate days of practice with days of personal art on this half an hour I had. This way I find it easier to do more practice as it do not conflict too much with personal art on my limited art time. Also I've done mostly gestures but not only, some other quick pencil studies were on the menu. Working pencil only is easier as it allow me to it nearly everywhere, I just need a pencil and my sketchbook. Meanwhile the day I am at home I can consecrate this time to painting and personal art. Tree studies Another things that I started to do and help me take more time to do gesture is semi regular gesture sessions with friends. These are longer, as my usual practice sessions are 15 to 30 minutes and are a good occasion to practice longer sketches, up to 10 minutes per pose. 1 hour gesture session recap And so does it helps to practice gesture regularly ? Well, as you would have guess it does. Not only you get better at gesture (which is always satisfying), but I found out it helped quite a lot for confident sketching, anatomy understanding, even thumbnails are a bit more readable and human-like. But mainly, it helped me a lot to think about how I do my gesture, hand gesture speaking. 30 s gesture from day 1 30s gesture from day 31 Trying to learn to draw more with my elbow and shoulder and less with wrist and finger (something I should have probably done a long ago) showed great improvement in my line confidence, and my pencil pressure control. Also side effects is that I draw bigger, which is probably good. A recent sketch that I think show the benefit of my gesture practice It also forced me to consider my sketchbook less as a perfect place, sometime even overlapping my gesture without caring too much about the final look, the point is practice after all. In particular the 15s gesture really helps for that's, they are really good practice but look.... strange. 15s gesture - these are quite a choatic mess for sure Also once you started liking it, gesture has something really fun and addictive ! Thank you for reading trough ! As a bonus enjoy some wips of what I've been working on the "personal art" days !
